FAQ

Why should I use a shredder?

No one should dispose of paper documents with sensitive information by just tossing them in the trash. Names, phone numbers, social security numbers, credit card receipts, customer information, financial and health documents and trade secrets are just some examples of paper you should shred. Identity theft is real!

Shredding paper is also better for the environment. You reduce the volume of waste and some people even use shredded paper for packing material. See our packaging shredders.

What's the difference between strip-cut and cross cut shredding?

Strip cut (also known as "straight cut"). The paper is cut vertically into long strips. The width of cuts can vary in size according to the cost and security level of the shredder. Strip cutting is a faster method but generally less secure than cross cutting.

Advantages of Strip cut:

  • Can shred more paper at a time
  • Faster shredding speed
  • Lower maintenance
  • Less expensive

Cross cut (also known as "confetti cut / particle cut"). A criss-cross format is used to shred the paper into small pieces. It can be a little slower than comparable strip cut shredding, however the security is better as an A4 sheet will be cut into hundreds of little pieces rather than as few as 30 on a basic strip cut.

Advantages of Cross cut:

  • Greater security
  • Reduces shredded bulk reducing the number of times that the waste bin requires emptying (About 80% more than strip-cut)

With fewer than ten employees, does it make sense for us to outsource document shredding?

Absolutely. Small organizations have limited personnel resources, and they may need to outsource paper shredding more than larger companies. Incred-A-Shred provides convenient bins onsite and conducts paper shredding according to your schedule.

What is the capacity of a shredder?

The paper or sheet capacity of a shredder refers to the number of sheets you can shred in one pass. Typically the strip-cut machines will shred more at once as they are only cutting in one direction, while the cross-cut shredders must cut in two directions. Capacity can vary greatly with shredders, from as little as 3 pages to 100+, depending on the size and capability of the shredder..

Can I shred anything besides paper?

Some paper shredders will also cut CD’s, credit cards and computer disks into small strips. These are specialized multimedia shredders, so look for this capability. A great many shredders can also handle staples and paper clips, however it can still increase wear on the cutting mechanisms. And it is not impossible for a paper clip to shoot out of the shredder while running, so it’s best to remove them if possible. However, if the shredder indicates it can take clips and staples then it will.

What is the best security level for me?

How do I maintain my shredder?

The most important maintenance you can do on a paper shredder is oiling it. We sell lightweight oil designed specifically for paper shredder blades. This oil can either be directly applied to the shredder blades, or be applied to a piece of paper that can then be run through the shredder. Once oil is applied to the shredder blades, run the paper shredder in "reverse" for 10-30 seconds. It is recommended to oil your shredder every time you change your bag.

NOTE: Do not use excessive amounts of oil! If you are still uncertain as to how much or how often you should oil it, please call us at +353 1 460 2200 and we will be more than happy to help!
